criticism with grace

Watch the movie quietly at first cut, before you read my post. Fellini, one of the more important Italian film maker, turned in the 70 years the film Roma. To see in him is a church fashion show. Consider that the protagonists are in the situation where the aggiornamento Johannnes XXIII. -Engages the splendor of the Roman Court under Paul VI. is disenchanted. The Roman people disappointed. Fellini oversubscribed. Turns out: morbidity. Externals. Pomp. But love-longing to what seems to have passed. In summary, an intermezzo that time in an extroverted, very opulent display.

This film shows several interesting things which I would like to highlight:

First, the style of polite and artistic criticism, which degenerates with eccentricity, in Fellini and makes us pause: When is now as intelligent criticism practiced? When one, to which it is also worthwhile to answer? If it is not often endless lurid or say: flat? I think, this is a criticism that is well made objectively and with integrity.
The second aspect worthy of consideration: is there any truth to the criticism: If the clothes are so long that you can not connect and the real meaning at all, is caricatured almost overflowing, then the operation will need supervision. And it's true: The Council was required.
The third aspect: the longing for the lost. It appears here as nostalgia. The "vice versa" is hated. Narrow-minded Italians, and which therefore do the old times, are so beautiful just because is? How are we doing? We must now distinguish strict: On the one hand, the liturgy on the other side of the personal Style. The liturgy must know all the pomp, but while we ourselves should be an example of simplicity, as it has shown us the Cure of Ars with his cassock worn yet. The vanity of the Roman oversubscribed many times but was clearly alien to the Gospel. This tassel ne more because a little silk, and there are a few titles. A ehrbezogene vanity of things but sometimes hovering over the clerical life. The most important thing in our thinking seems to me, as always, the Virtus in medio stat: In the sacred liturgy in a sense the equivalent of usefulness and beauty. Therefore, I am a friend of the old Mass, or a Lovers of the reform of the reform. On the one side is pure ritualism of the death of a living faith, on the other hand, the euphoria of living faith that have no specific paths of the liturgy by its tradition as dangerous as unlimited and mutation risk. Benedict XVI. does this with flying colors: it triggers a sense of Fellini's dissonance with his formula of noble simplicity and beauty of the divine liturgy. What may be pompig, designed solely for the Lord, but for us and for the cleric but is a law that is in moderation rather than pretentious plaster.

Conclusion: Fellini's dissonance is followed by the skillful Resolution by the Holy Father. Liturgy in the tradition of loyalty, turns increasingly to the 'real: for the Lord. Our own life, however simple that simplicity should give an appearance of the heart. In short: not the habit makes the monk-opulent, it would not be shown.
